Kean family papers [manuscript], 1795-1955 1840-1900.

Papers of the Kean family of Louisa County, Virginia, and the related Callis, Graves, Hunter and Vaughan families. The majority of the collection consists of family correspondence, with some receipts, legal and financial documents, and photographs. Of interest is a "Memorandum of the age of Negros," giving the birth years of slaves owned by Andrew and Julian Kean. The years range from 1799 to 1861. Also of interest is an 1850 letter by Robert Garlick Hill Kean to Julian Kean, written from the University of Virginia. Also of interest are circa 30 Civil War-era letters. Several letters are from Confederate soldier William Callis Kean of the Richmond Howitzers to his sister, Chloe Middleton Tolson Kean. One of Kean's letters discusses the religious revival under way in the Confederate army. The remainder are between family members at home. There are also circa 80 letters from Louis L. Kean to his family and friends during World War II. Correspondents include: Lavinia Callis, William Overton Callis, Susan Vaughan Kean Graves, Mary Callis Boston Hunter, John Hunter, Andrew Kean, Chloe Middleton Tolson Kean, Julian Kean, Louis L. Kean, Robert Garlick Hill Kean, William Callis Kean, and Robert C. Vaughan.
